Why Weight Management is Important

What is weight management?

Weight management is our ability to influence how much we weigh, and ideally, how we maintain a healthy weight. A healthy weight is a guideline number associated with better health outcomes. Our healthy weight range varies depending on our age, genetics, body frame, lifestyle habits and weight as young adults.

Maintaining a healthy weight throughout the different stages of life can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, blood pressure and other diseases. It’s something we can all benefit from being mindful of. Weight can be managed through our diet and lifestyle choices. Factors such as eating a balanced diet, regularly taking on physical activity, being mindful of stress and getting plenty of sleep can all contribute to healthy weight management.

Weight loss and where to start.

In life, it’s not always straightforward and the scales can start to tip in the wrong direction. This can leave us feeling insecure about our appearance, and less fit and healthy, and it can also cause changes in how well our body functions over time. You may be wondering how you can start your weight loss journey to rebalance the scales to a healthy weight. These simple steps can help you manage your weight loss safely:

  1. Take your time and lose weight gradually. Drastic weight loss diets are less effective as you are more likely to rebound. Instead, lose weight gradually. Small reductions week by week help you to adjust to change and prevent any cravings, big dips in energy and feelings of deprivation.
  2. Increase your physical activity. Moving more works your muscles which in turn burns calories. It also plays a role in your mental health and wellbeing, boosting your self-esteem and can-do weight-loss attitude.
  3. Pay attention to when and what you’re eating. Avoid eating for the sake of it and become more in-tune with your body to eat when you’re hungry. Having a greater appreciation for food when you eat it can provide greater satisfaction for eating, reducing the need to overeat.
  4. Eat more fibre to keep you fuller for longer. If you struggle with overeating and snacking between meals, you may find that increasing your dietary fibre helps to deter food cravings. Glucomannan is a natural fibre that can be taken to support weight loss by helping you to feel fuller for longer.

Glucomannan and weight loss.

Also known as Konjac Fibre, Glucomannan is a naturally occurring, water-soluble fibre derived from elephant yam. The fibre has an exceptional ability to absorb water and is one of the most viscous dietary fibres present in the diet.

It’s believed to promote weight loss as it is very low in calories but takes up a large amount of space in the stomach, making you feel full, which reduces the desire to take in more food. It also delays stomach emptying, further contributing to increased satiety. This mechanism of action contributes to a reduced calorie intake which supports weight loss.

Glucomannan is provided by Lifeplan in an easy to take capsules. Each capsule provides 0.5g of the 3g of glucomannan required on a daily basis to support weight loss, with the idea being that you take 1g (2 capsules) with a large glass of water before each meal.
