It’s a great product and has dramatically lowered my cholesterol. For years I have tried to lower my cholesterol through eating porridge but clearly I wasn’t getting enough beta glucan.

  • Q: What is cholesterol?
A: Cholesterol is a fatty substance found naturally in the body. There are 2 sources of cholesterol: 1) the liver, which produces around 1 gram of cholesterol per day and 2) the diet. Our bodies need some cholesterol to function properly. It’s used to form cell membranes, hormones, bile acid and vitamin D. There are 2 main types of cholesterol in the body, LDL and HDL. LDL takes cholesterol to cells in the body, whereas HDL takes cholesterol back to the liver. Excess LDL is bad for health.
  • Q: How to check your cholesterol levels.
A: There are no obvious signs indicating what level your cholesterol is. If you are worried about your cholesterol level, it’s best to speak with a doctor. They will be able to determine your cholesterol with a blood test. A good cholesterol level should be less than 5.0 mmol/L.
  • Q: To what extent does oat beta-glucan affect cholesterol levels in the blood?
A: More than 100 scientific studies have been carried out and published in well-known scientific journals regarding the effect of oat beta-glucan on the cholesterol level in the blood. Studies regarding various foodstuffs (breakfast cereals, bread, cakes and pastries, drinks, pasta, snacks, etc.) have shown that beta-glucan can reduce the unwanted LDL cholesterol level by up to 10%. The HDL cholesterol level remains unaffected.
  • Q: How many portions of OatWell™ should be consumed per day?
A: Your cholesterol level can be reduced through a daily intake of 3g of oat beta-glucan. Each portion of the OatWell™ products contains the full 3g of beta-glucan and thus contribute to lowering cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Beta-glucans also contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Oat beta-glucan is a naturally occurring dietary fibre contained in oats. Dietary fibres are valuable plant-based ingredients which should be part of every balanced diet.
  • Q: Why is a healthy diet and a balanced lifestyle important?
A: Your diet plays an important role in determining your cholesterol levels and overall health. As well as including beta-glucan in your diet, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can increase important cholesterol-lowering compounds in your diet. These compounds include plant stanols or sterols, which work like soluble fibre. Fruits and vegetables also contain lots of essential vitamins and minerals, which support your health and wellbeing. Reducing your saturated fat intake is also important, as too much saturated fat can raise your blood cholesterol.
