Home hair washing hacks
Shampooing might seem simple, but there’s a knack to washing your hair in a way that doesn’t leave it dry or damaged. For healthy looking hair, follow these tips next time you step in the shower.
Use lukewarm water
You might love a hot shower, but your hair doesn’t. If the water is too hot, it can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it looking and feeling dry. Instead, keep the shower lukewarm to protect your hair when washing.
Comb before shampooing
Brushing hair when wet can cause it to break, so if your hair is tangled, comb it before you step under the shower to make it easier to manage.
Condition with care
Applying conditioner to your scalp can cause your roots to look greasy. Try using conditioner on just the lengths and ends of your hair for shiny, healthy-looking hair that’s easy to style.
Avoid towel drying
Rubbing hair with a towel can leave it in poor condition. Use your towel to gently pat excess water from your hair after washing, before using a hairdryer or leaving your hair to air dry. If using a hairdryer, apply a heat protection product to prevent damage.
Wash less often
Washing your hair everyday can strip away its natural oils and cause any colour to fade faster. Shampooing too often can leave your hair dry and damaged, but the frequency of washes will depend on your hair type and how quickly it gets greasy. Generally, you should wash your hair every 2-3 days.
Give your hair extra support
When combined with careful washing, supplements can help you maintain healthy hair all year round. A balanced diet that’s rich in protein, colourful fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and wholegrains can also help keep your hair looking and feeling its best. Vitamins like Biotin (also known as vitamin B7), Selenium and Zinc contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. Copper which is needed in small amounts, contributes to normal hair pigmentation.
